The renowned actress Meryl Streep has denounced before the UN in an emotional speech that sought to make visible the oppression suffered by millions of women since “the situation of Afghan women and girls since the Taliban’s assault on power”.
At the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) that started this Monday, September 24 in New York City, leaders and personalities from other fields participated, including the actress Meryl Streep, who called for empathy in favor of women in Afghanistan, denouncing the terrible situation they live in the Asian country, especially since the Taliban’s assault on power.
During her participation in the speech before the ONU, the actress pointed out: Women’s voices can no longer be heard in public and that they are not allowed to look directly at men “that now even animals have more rights in Afghanistan due to the increase in restrictions on women. Among other things, the Taliban’s new rules state that women’s voices can no longer be heard in public and that they are not allowed to look directly at men to whom they are not related by blood or marriage. Women have to completely cover their faces and bodies when leaving the house, they are banned from going to schools, parks, gyms and sports clubs and there are restrictions on the type of work they are allowed to do.”
She also noted: “A cat can sit on the porch of its house and feel the sun on its face.” Today in Kabul, a cat has more freedom than a woman. “A cat can sit on the porch of its house and feel the sun on its face, it can chase a squirrel in the park,” denounced actress Meryl Streep in her speech at the event entitled ‘The inclusion of women in the future of Afghanistan’ where the documentary entitled ‘The Sharp Edge of Peace’ was screened, a film directed by Roya Sadat that recounts the participation of four Afghan leaders in the Doha talks before the Taliban took power.
Finally, actress Meryl Streep added that “A bird can sing in Kabul, but a girl cannot sing in public.”
The actress explained, “Today, a squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan because the Taliban have closed public parks to women and girls. A bird can sing in Kabul, but a girl cannot sing in public. This is extraordinary. It is a suppression of natural law. The way this culture, this society has been turned upside down, is a warning to the rest of the world,” Streep said, calling on world leaders to “stop the slow suffocation of Afghan women and girls.”
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who attended the event, commented that Afghanistan “will never take its rightful place on the world stage” without educated and employed women.
