Republicans have chosen Senator John Thune of South Dakota as the next Senate majority leader.
John Thune, 63, is in his fourth term in the Senate, and has promised to work closely with Trump despite the differences the two have had over the years. He won 29 votes in favor compared to 24 for his rival, Texas Senator John Cornyn.
The new Republican leader in the Upper House, who is an ally of outgoing leader and Senator Mitch McConnell, has been one of Trump’s critics, but now that the tycoon will occupy the White House, the legislator has tried to smooth things over.
Republicans also wrested control of the White House and likely the House of Representatives, as well as a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Thune’s relationship with Trump is notoriously bumpy, dating back to Thune’s call for vice presidential nominee Mike Pence to take over the GOP ticket in 2016, when the “Access Hollywood” tape of Trump having a lewd conversation about sexually abusing women was leaked.
Thune later voted to acquit Trump in the impeachment trial following the 2021 Capitol riots, but added that “what (Trump) did to undermine faith in our electoral system and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power is inexcusable.”
Thune has since worked to repair the rift, ultimately endorsing Trump for 2024.
