A bus carrying 70 illegal migrants of 12 different nationalities was intercepted by the Guatemalan national police in Escuintla (south of the country) on the highway leading to Mexico.
The detainees are the two alleged “coyotes” (illegal human traffickers), the driver of the vehicle and his assistant.
Among the passengers, the largest group was 21 Cubans, and there were at least 11 minors.
The operation is the result of “a line of investigation into criminal structures dedicated to illegal human trafficking,” the National Police reported on its account on the social network X.
The 70 passengers, all from Latin American and Asian countries such as Venezuela, Ecuador, Honduras, Brazil, as well as Cubans; and from Vietnam, India, Russia above all, were sent to the Guatemalan Institute for repatriation.
Central America serves as a corridor for thousands of migrants from different parts of the world who try to reach the United States.
