Mexican military implicated in the deaths of 6 migrants in Chiapas

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Thursday that she will investigate the shooting by the military involved in a truck carrying migrants that resulted in the deaths of six of them. In southern Mexico, they are at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office and she insisted that it should be that body that carries out the investigation of the case together with the military police.

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident and those involved will be punished, Sheinbaum said in response to questions from the press on Thursday. The Peruvian government condemned in a statement the events of October 1, in which one of its nationals died. Among the dead that day were also citizens of Egypt and El Salvador, Sheinbaum said.

Army fires on migrants in Chiapas:

After inspecting the truck, the armed forces identified 33 migrants of Egyptian, Nepalese, Cuban, Indian and Pakistani nationality, of whom four died on the spot, 12 were injured and 17 escaped unharmed, the Mexican ministry reported.

“Military personnel provided first aid to the injured, immediately transporting them by vehicle to the General Hospital of Huixtla, in Chiapas, where unfortunately two more lost their lives,” the statement said.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry reported that a citizen of its country was also among the victims and “strongly” condemned the incident.

“The Peruvian government, through its diplomatic representation in Mexico, will demand that the authorities of that country carry out an urgent investigation to clarify and determine the responsibilities of the reprehensible act,” the Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement published on the social network X.

The Mexican office of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) expressed “concern” about the incident and highlighted the “great risks” faced by migrants and the need to “have legal means of access, transit and integration to avoid tragedies like this.”
