Mexican soldiers killed 6 people after opening fire on a group of 33 migrants

Mexican authorities also confirmed that 10 other migrants were injured.

The Mexican Defense Secretariat reported on Wednesday that members of the Army killed six migrants after shooting at a pick-up truck that had tried to evade a military patrol and which they assumed was part of “those used by criminal groups in that region.”

“Military personnel reported hearing explosions, so two elements activated their weapons, stopping one of the pickup trucks,” the entity explained about the event in a press release.

According to the statement, the soldiers “upon approaching” identified “33 migrants of Egyptian, Nepalese, Cuban, Indian, Pakistani and Arab nationality, of which four had died.”

“The military personnel provided first aid to the wounded, immediately transporting them by vehicle to the General Hospital of Huixtla, Chis., where unfortunately two more lost their lives,” it said.

Another 10 migrants were injured. “The 17 migrants who were placed under the disposition of the National Institute of Migration,” the Secretariat mentioned.

The two soldiers involved were removed from their duties, as confirmed by the entity in the press release.

In addition, it specified that the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic was informed so that it can carry out the corresponding legal proceedings and determine the responsibilities that correspond to the authority.

“Without prejudice to the fact that the Attorney General’s Office of Military Justice carries out the previous investigations, regarding military discipline, and coordination was established with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that it remains in contact with the corresponding embassies,” it added.

The Ministry of National Defense highlighted its commitment to “act with the full weight of the law and the rule of law, under a policy of zero impunity and is attentive to requests from civil authorities to clarify the facts.”
