The Attorney General of Bolivia ordered that an immigration alert be activated against Evo Morales and an investigation be started against him for alleged cases of corruption during his presidential administration.
The complaint, by former deputies Amilcar Barrar and Yesenia Yarhuri Albino, is about the management of resources from a millionaire program called the Indigenous Fund and the signing of contracts with the Chinese company CAMC, managed by an alleged ex-girlfriend of the former president. According to the former parliamentarians, the total economic damage to the State would be 1,000 million dollars, an amount of money that must be verified in investigations by the Public Ministry. The accusation is attached to other accusations opened during the last few weeks against Morales, which include cases of human trafficking and statutory rape; considered by the Evo supporters as a lawfare campaign to eliminate him from the political scene.
Morales was supposed to appear before the commission of prosecutors investigating the case last Thursday, but he did not attend, so now he must face an arrest warrant issued by the Attorney General’s Office. “The law so dictates, whether it is Evo Morales or Juan Pérez, the law is absolutely for everyone and we are working on what is required in accordance with the law. What is required is to issue the arrest warrant since they have been notified without their rights having been violated,” said prosecutor Sandra Gutiérrez to the media. Although so far, it is unknown whether the warrant was issued.
The possible arrest of Morales has raised a wave of protests with nationwide blockades by his followers to “protect freedom, integrity and kidnapping.”
Evo Morales threatens to block Bolivia if he is captured
The former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales threatened last Saturday, October 12, to block the main roads of the country if the Attorney General’s Office complies with the arrest warrant against him.
The former president said that he has the support of leaders of different social organizations and that they will take action.
